Duplicator Pinbar Plate Punches
As more and more printers with duplicator presses are switching
to laser plates, there are increasing inquiries about pinbar punches for the
plates. Often the inquiry about the punch is associated with a request for
register pins to fit the pinbar holes.
Hopefully this Weekly Word will clarify the purpose of
the pinbar punch and why these pins don’t exist.
THE PINBAR PUNCH IS NOT A REGISTRATION PUNCH!
Here are a few facts to consider when asking for the pinbar
punch to function as a registration punch:
 |
The laser plate is generated in your
computer. There is no stripping involved that would require registration. |
 |
The plates for multiple-color jobs are
registered to each other in the computer. |
 |
Most importantly – the pinbar on the press
is adjustable. You can’t use the pinbar holes as registration holes if the bar
can be moved from plate-to-plate, job-to-job. The purpose of the adjustments
is to properly place the plate’s image on the paper. |
REGISTRATION PUNCH VS. PINBAR PUNCH
Registration punches are designed to punch the film, mask and
plate to maintain registration through the print job. The pinbar punches are
strictly for punching the standard 1/2" – on center pinbar holes that are used
to secure the plate to the clamp. These punches come in a 25-pin punch for plates
up to 121/2" wide or a 36/38-pin punch for 18" plates. The plate punches from
James Burn International have an extended alignment pin that allows them to be
used on plates approximately 50% wider than their punch width (requires double
punching each end).
Here are some frequently encountered presses with the
recommended pinbar punch:
